I had soo much fun playing this game on the C-64, which I still have, back in the day. Thank you for remaking this game!
fred on 2010-07-08 04:54:54
Lots of fun! Thank you for remaking this game! We were just playing Flight Director Lite and Air Control (both Android mobile apps) and I had to think back of my C-64 days playing this game.
MachineDr on 2010-06-27 09:44:05
Hello, I\'m curious, why are you doing a remake of Red Storm Rising for the PC? It was available for the PC and ran under DOS. If you search, you can find it on a few different download sites. While I can\'t say it is now Public Domain, Microprose hasn\'t complained and the sites it can be found on are reputable. RSR is my all-time favorite Sub Game. I bought it for every platform I have ever owned. Thank you in advance for your answer. Best regards, Jim MachineDr

Really what I have been dreaming of: KennedyApproach on my iMac (running parallels desktop and xp). Believe it or not, but I used to play this game for over 20 years - first on my C64 and for the last ten year using an emulation. This is much better. This is perfect. Thank you.
Muellerman on 2010-05-26 13:53:04
Hello from Germany!! Thanks for the great remake of Kennedy Approach!! It was one of my favorite games I played on the C64!! And now I\'m very happy to play it during the coffee break on my Nc10 :-\) Thanks a lot for this awesome remake!!!
george on 2010-05-03 14:39:10
FYI - I just installed a microphone device and KA fails with some error msg. The error is very reprdducible. The mike connects to the sound card (not USB). Im using Window 7 Pro with all the latest maintenance. When I disconnected the mike, KA works fine. For now, am leaving the mike (a Logitech device) unplugged, b/c the game is cooler than voice recognition.

RSR remake project is a live?
Adrian on 2010-02-12 08:47:29
RSR rocks! Bless you for bringing new life to a classic!
Gregr of Kvatch on 2010-01-30 20:26:02
Really enjoy playing KA and looking forward to RSR (which is probably quite an undertaking for you)!
Chip on 2010-01-28 01:26:37
What ever happened to your RSR remake project? I still play the original on my older dos computer. I think I first played it on my C-64. I could not believe Microprose never updated it. GREAT GAME.

This game is really great. It will be a good idea to make a Mac Os X version. Thank you for your work. Such a game shall survive.

What a blast from the past.. Had a Atari 800xl and had done a lot of hours on this game. thanks for resurrecting it!

HELP I\'m addicted to Kennedy - fantastic job - you\'re a genius! But it has stopped working - won\'t open from the title page. Have re downloaded it several times, but no joy - can\'t even get it to open straight of this site. Can you suggest anything? Lynn

THANK YOU! I loved this game on C64 yeeeears ago, and it's such a pleasure to see it again. And just the same look. Wow, great job! IMHO this game beats the crap out of a lot of modern games with posh graphics etc. Thank you so much for your effort.
No problem. Thanks!

Hi, I really like this remake, it's absolutelly the best! I have created FaceBook fan-group for anybody who want to show that he like it very much: LINK
Great! Added to links.

Hi! I'm remember the first contact with the C64. It's great.
Thank you!

Hi! Just wanted to tell you that Kennedy Approach work with Ubuntu 9.04 and Wine 1.0.1. Still a great game ... cheers, maclean
Cool, thanks for the info!
Popie on 2009-05-31 22:47:55
Remaking RSR is one of the best things I've seen happen in the PC field in a long time. The C64 had great games, people with great imagination but not enough power with the hardware and software. Kind of like George Lucas not making Episodes I, II and III because the technology just wasn't there to make it look good. So far, RSR is looking just that, REALLY good (not a complete sodding mess like the last three Star Wars movies).
Hold your horses, it isn't finished yet (might still become utter crap). Naaaaah, it'll be great :-\)
Ralle on 2009-05-22 23:40:45
Many thanks for the reincarnation of Kennedy Approach! Even the (SAM reciter) voice is perfect. I played the C64 version quite often and will continue to have fun with the new one. I'm also eagerly awaiting Red Storm Rising, it was one of the best and most advanced and funny tactical games of its time. Hope you can make it, but I have no doubt.
Thanks, it will take some time, but I will get it done :-\)
Greg on 2009-04-25 16:06:43
Kennedy Approach was my favorite C 64 game and I was always hoping there would be a remake and this is exactly as I remember it and still as addictive as ever. Really great work
Thanks a lot !

I do like this remake of Kennedy Approach. I become addicted to this game again on PC like before on ATARI. I have to say that remake is easy to play and I had play this game first day for 7 hours and my girlfriend consider it as new lover competing to her.
Girlfriends only last so long ;-). Enjoy the game !
DonFunk on 2009-04-04 04:45:58
Hi, I remember playing this game on my amiga. Ever consider porting the game to the iPhone/iPod Touch?
Yes and I won't do it. Too much hassle to get it done without buying an Apple PC. (and I doubt it will be playable). :-\)

maddpsyintyst on 2009-03-19 18:58:02
Finding this port was a surprise; playing it was a joy! My stepdad was an ATC man for the Air Force until he retired; he has said that it's often about as hard as civilian ATC work, especially on a base with two runways and the Flying Training Wing HQ breathing down your neck! While he was still on active duty back in the 80s, he got this game for our Atari 800 and 800XL computers. His plan was to do this work after retirement (though he didn't after all), so he wanted me to see what it would like for him. I loved the game, but wasn't nearly as good then as I am now (ha ha)! I have yet to show my stepdad that I found this, but he\'ll probably be amused to find out that you did this and have received praise from old fans of the game (and even from some magazines, it seems). Take care, and keep up the good work!
Thanks ! And have fun, both of you :-\)
natronix on 2009-02-14 07:47:14
Red Storm Rising - great job so far; eagerly anticipating... There was a feature never implemented for the game but it is listed in the documentation. There was to be a feature drawn on the tactical called "zone of uncertainty" which supposedly would draw a circle around where the target was estimated to be instead of just the assumed point for the contact. This is a difficult calculation to do in reality but could be just sort of faked and would get pretty messy fast on the display if there wasn't a right-click to turn it on or off...
Upuaut on 2009-01-17 15:35:52
Absolutelly great work. This took me twenty years back in time, when I played it as a little boy on my Atari 800

Thanks!

Thanks :-\)

Thank you very much. Kennedy Approach came to my mind these days without any reason. I wondered whether there is any similar game available today. After searching a bit via google (I didnt' remember the name of the game) I ended up on your page. Running the game and all the memories came back. I loved the game in the 80s and love it today. By the way: I like the port to mouse control.
You're welcome.
john smith on 2008-11-27 15:43:44
Can we have joystick support like the original?
No sorry, I won't be making that. Anyways, you wouldn't get far using a joystick :) Mouse is supported, but same here, it's way too slow for the pace of the game at higher levels.
Scotty on 2008-11-21 22:12:11
Thanks, man. It's amazing how quickly the pixel-distance measuring came back to me. It's still bloody hard, though...
Pixel-distance measuring. Haven't heard that phrase in a loooong time. Enjoy the game :-\)
Yukon on 2008-11-05 01:57:16
This is an incredible conversion. Its exactly the same game play that I remember, only improved! I played this game all through highschool in the late 80's and wrote my ATC examinations after I graduated because of this game!! Great work on the conversion!
Thank you !

I can't believe it! For years, I've told my boys about this air traffic controller game that I used to play for hoiurs on my C64. I couldn't even remember the name of it. My oldest hunted around and found one but I looked at it and said, "Nah... not it." His looking for me nudged me to do some kind of Google search. Right off, first time, your program came up. It's awesome! Killer in it's simplicity! I don't know if I want a version better than the original. Isn't that the point? Great job, my friend!
Thanks to you too! So do your kids like the game?

Thanks and, no, I dont have a site for donations :-\) Who knows, I might be adding it.

Your remake brings me right back to my teens! I was so entranced by this game back then. As for some of the other commenters, I was the only person I knew that enjoyed the game. Very nicely done, and so true to the original.
Thank you! We must be belonging to some 'strange' strain of humans :-\)
Big Head Zach on 2008-09-19 19:45:08
What a great, simple game. How shocked I was to find that for all its graphics and professionalism, it was written in BASIC. No wonder it's spot on. Do you have plans other than airport expansions to maybe add features to the game? You had mentioned wanting to keep the graphics and sound faithful to the original, but maybe there's a bit of panache that can be added.
Didn't know it was written in Basic, nor have I seen any source code from the original. How do you know, would be cool to actually see the code ;-) And yes, as it looks right now, we are gonna make a version with cooler graphics.
Christopher on 2008-09-09 10:47:09
Excellent work! I used to play this game as a young pre-teen kid on an old Atari 800xl. At first glance, it appears you've hit the game spot-on. The CG voice took me back to my childhood days! I would play this game NOW but it's nearly 3am. I'll give my ATC skills a thorough testing soon. Thanks for the effort.
You're welcome. Enjoy the game, just don't play it too much, it will kill the memories ;-)

In 1988, I couldn't help myself about waiting for THIRTY minutes to load world war three in RSR, obviously TAPE version for C64, all three tapes had to be loaded. What a thrill hearing the torpedo incoming and what a thrill the alert sounds. Awesome ! Reently I bought and enjoied once mor those thrills, just playing the DISK drive version on my C64 but now I can't help myself waiting for YOUT PC version. Keep on doing the good job, the screenshots are awesome, I hope the game will be too. Obviously Ken.App. is GREAT too.
I've had the exact same experiences. Luckily they made it so all you had to do is turn the tape instead of rewind it :-\) Thanks for commenting!

While browsing some Atari forums I found a link to your site and couldn`t believe my eyes : Someone has gone through the trouble to remake my beloved game for PC. It`s one of few games that I still play under an emulator. Now I can play it directly. Thank you for your effort ! It`s VERY appreciated. You simply rock !
Thank you very much.

The wait has now an end. Weps managed to fullfill the wish of so many C64 Kennedy Approach Fans around the world: A real PC Version in classic C64 look. What we all say: Hail you Weps. Please keep on your great work. Even Andy Hollis can´t do it better now.
I don't know about that Andy Hollis part... Thanks !
Paul on 2007-11-22 01:49:08
Nicely done! I used to play this game for hours and hours on my old Atari. I can remember setting up dimmed lighting and LOTS of coffee to deal with JFK in prime time. You've done a credible job of recreating that experience. Thanks a bunch. Of course I am a lot older now and don't have nearly the time to devote to it but this one will sit on my desktop to power up when I need a kick.
Tony on 2010-08-11 23:17:15
Absolutely brilliant! My C64 has not been used for 20 yrs and this sim is better than the original in all respects. The pressure is more than the real thing! It\'s a good thing real ATC isn\'t like this. It works well on a Vista machine. Thank you so much.
uk_john on 2010-07-02 14:36:14
Coming up to the first anniversary of me finding, downloading and playing this exact duplication of your Kennedy Approach - and yes, it's still on my desktop, and yes, I am still playing it!
Made some improvements too, haven't been able to roll them out yet....
twinpowr on 2010-06-24 13:45:39
OMG! This is just brilliant, played this on my old commodore vic 20, yes it was available on the vic 20 too. rip vic 20. plays just like I remember. Ok so the graphics are not great, but neither was the original, but the excitement of the original has been captured. I would also love to see a remake of the old commodore game \\\\\\\"StarFleet\\\\\\\" perhaps if you get the time you would consider a remake of this too. A huge well done!
Neuman35 on 2010-05-27 06:20:34
Have you finished your re-working of RSR?? I would love to be able to play this again. I think I still have the game somewhere in storage but lack the 3.5 or 5 inch drives to play it! Thanks

I\'m absolutely hooked on KA. Up to GS57, Have to play a shift every evening.

Just discovered this site as well. this game looks amazing, and im a huge CLancy fan. but is sub warfare the only type we\\\\\\\'ll be able to fight? cause i seem to recall quite a bit of fighter plane action as well, i think it would be awesome to have full fledged carrier battles in the game.
Terry on 2010-03-13 21:46:43
Do you have a time-line for completing RSR?
Grembo on 2010-01-31 10:38:55
Just discovered your site. I have had so much fun with Kennedy Approach, brings back memories. I can\'t wait for Red Storm Rising. I started out on a TRS-80, then moved onto the vic-20, C=64, C=128, Amiga 1000 and 500, etc. The graphics are better now but I long for some of the old games. I would kill to have a pc version of Elite. Congrats and thank you for your work.

What a game!! The original for C64 was great but may the past rule with people like you that worked so [hard not in graphics and lines, but on fullfilling dreams of the KA fans of all consoles. Just one question How can you add new airports, without altering the program?

I'll just have to repeat what everyone else has been saying - thank you for sharing your talent! I know you're busy, but if you don't mind I'll keep checking back to see if you might consider remaking the C64 version of Gunship.
Fat Controller on 2009-07-18 22:17:40
Hi, excellent job with Kennedy, Its weird but I keep finding myself downloading C64 emulators and playing it year after year ...it's just so addictive. My love affair with the game just never ends, now thanks to you I'm playing it on my 64bit Vista in a nice tidy app. I always wanted a full bells and whistles remake but they just don't make them like this anymore and would simply spoil it. Great work buddy...you're a star.
Thanks! Enjoy!

Re: Donfunk's suggestion - port to iPhone. Yes, much hassle, and there is already a similar app called Flight Control, so it's doable.
Maybe, I'm still wondering how to get the height/direction input with a finger...

I wish you could include an option to save the game in the middle of the game. Sometimes I would like to keep playing the scenario past the time but then I can't save it and come back to it later. BTW, great remake, you did a fantastic job!
I'm not planning on making that, but I'm busy making a level completely replayable ;)
Sean on 2009-05-28 04:38:19
This is wonderful, I have been looking for KA forever for a pc. I still have the original game on disk and a working c=128. I've kept it just so I could play KA. This version is very close to what I'm used to playing, Some of the airports I've never played til now. Thank you for creating this. Now I don't have to break out the old c=128 to get a fix. Again Thanks
Those airports are made by players like you, they were not in the original game. Thanks ;-)
Rocky on 2009-04-29 07:58:46
I had the Atari version of KA. You should mention that the Atari version had a special use of ROM and a dedicated sound chip to elevate the sound from 8-bit to 16-bit.
I didn't know about that, thanks for the info.

Thanks a lot. I play this game since my Atari 130 XE. :-\) One small bug with release 1.92: with french keyboard (azerty), it's impossible to select starting level (1-5). This keayboard need to shift+key to select a number (ex: Shift+& = 1). When i caps lock my keyboard it works well.
I'll see what I can/should do about this. Thanks !
Daniel, Sweden on 2009-04-09 01:58:27
Thanx a lot! This game has been haunting me since my copy mysteriously broke down in ´88. I loved the game and still do. Nice to see that old games still can be so thrilling, without the top-of-the-line graphics and blistering sound effects. It's got to be something about the game's soul. Kennedy Approach has a lot of soul, I would say. Once again, thanks a lot!
You're welcome !

Greg on 2009-01-19 21:56:56
Thanks for the remake!!! I was discussing old games with my grown kids over Christmas and KA came up. I still have my C64 and occassionaly hook it up to my Sony 50 inch. I appreciate the effort you are putting into game conversion! RSR was one off my favorites, too. I've ported DOS games to XP but missed KA-until now (some of the best games have been around a while). Now a question. Is it possible to get KA Full Screen? My current view is an ~ 5 x 5 screen. Thanks again!!!
Thanks to you too! And no, sorry, no full screen, but you can play around twice the size by using /big on the command line.

Must have done something wrong on the last message since it didn't take. My question was, "When are you going to add the ablility to toggle the timer off?" In case I wanted to play a certain airport for a long time.
Don't know what might have gone wrong there. However, what you requested will be in 1.90 (releasing it this week). Not a switch tho, just a "continue" option ;)

I so want to put a swear word in front of 'fantastic'! But I don't swear! This has to be one of the greatest original games ever- and so faithfully reproduced! It is a game for refined minds, and Microprose knew exactly what those refined minds wanted! Hence this game, or better yet, 'experience'! You, sir, are a genius of great proportions!
Thanks a lot :-\) Too bad refined games like this aren't made :(
Geoffrey on 2008-12-04 01:10:14
You know what's funny? I didn't like this game back in the Commodore 64 days. I might not have had a manual (whoops) and I think that the graphics turned me off, which is hilarious, because now, over 20 years later, I don't care about the graphics and am addicted to your port of Kennedy Approach. Thank-you! I do have a feature request, however. It would be nice to have an option (maybe hidden, like an easter egg, because I can tell you are in to being faithful with your port) that let's the player play as long as they want. Sometimes I hate the end of the fifteen minutes... Anyway, great job. What programming language did you use? Thanks, again, Geoffrey
Thanks. I wrote it in Object Pascal (Delphi). Simple canvas draw (yeah, no fancy stuff) and dx7 for sound.
Scotty on 2008-11-21 22:51:38
Oh, by the way - you were mentioned in this month's (UK) Total PC Gaming.
Cool, can you provide me with a screenshot of the article?

I'll just be one more to thank you for this, your remake is amazing. Here in Argentina I was never able to get KA on tape, so I played it at a high school friend's house every Tuesday and Thursday after gym class, for hours and hours... Thanks again, please consider setting up a donations page, it'd be great to at least invite you a couple of beers.
Thanks for the comment, I rather have those than donations :-\) (really!) but hey, the donation button is there. Just don't overdo it, alcohol makes me type bad !

I was adicted to this game on the C64 now I can get my "fix" every day. Thank you so much. My favorate spot is level 3 Denver. Why not make a mode that will let me play level 3 Denver for as long as I want and not cut off in ten minutes.
That's in the making. Check the news section regurlarly :-\) Thank you too !

Wonderful game! I spent too many hours on my Atari on this one, and now its running amok on my PC. And with the new towns, there are so many challenges! And thanks for posting up Orlando - I can actually see my little "dot" house on the map!
No problem pall, no problem :-\)

Thank you for reanimating one of the best 8-bit games.

Fantastic Job!!! For years I have been typing in "Kennedy Approach" in google, and only came up with other "Andy Hollis" projects. Just for old times' sake, I typed it in this morning and Bingo! there it was. I am so greatful to your for taking me back to the old days.
Seeing people comment and liking my remake makes me feel good ! Thank you too !

Hi since 1985 I play this game and this last years with C64 emulator ! Your version is great and, however, I have some requests to improve maniability : can you use the diagonal arrow on numeric pad ? the 7 make upper AND turning left The 9 make upper and turning left the plane The 3 make lower and turning right The 1 make lower and turning right This is how it work in original version ! Regards Fred from France !
Sent you an email, need more input. And thanks :-\)

KenApp is driving me really MAD and that's cool !!! In "the games" section I see you like also flight simulators: it seems to me you missed "Project: Stealth Fighter", that was cool too, it ran on my C=64 for several years and gave me fun... good your RSR video too. Keep on going on, I'll keep your site "under control" ! If you'll need a beta tester, don't hesitate to drop me some lines... :-\)))
For beta testing, sign up on the forums pages. Thanks :-\)

Hi there, stumbled across this site yesterday and am transfixed! I used to play KA on the 64 when it was my all time favourite game (but no one else seemed to like it). Have managed to keep my hand in with various emulators over the years, but this is much slicker, much more accurate and finally has the ability to save your status! What more could we ask? Great to see the London map and that Hong Kong map - it looks impossible from one quick try - I can see many hours going down the drain. :-\) Thank you, thank you, thank you. Well done.
None of my friends liked the game either.... I guess we picked the wrong friends, lol :-\) Thanks.

I can't wait for Red Storm Rising to be finished as I spent days worth of time playing it on my 486.
That will take a (much) longer time, AI and sonar stuff is quite challenging !

This is amazing! As Vlad wrote - you simply rock! I can repeat all the words posted before, but it doesn't make sense. Just - thank you very much for that. Crazy time came back :)
Thank you!

I tried your remake of Kennedy Approach today and it is awesome. Kennedy Approach was one of my top 10 favorite games for the C64 and it is awesome to have a remake of that game once again.

Last week I found a C64 emulator that works well and I was able to play Kennedy Approach with it. This game was also my prefered game about 20 years ago and it still is. Today I was searching for better instructions but I found better than that. I found your Beta version 10 for PC. I tried it and it work a lot better than the original. Every time I punch a key, it sees it every time. It’s a lot faster. And a lot less frustrating. Thanks to you.
