2009-02-01 Version 1.92 released
The screw-up fairy visited me again... Colors are all messed up, switching to the new drawing mechanism I did notice it and added a converter when reading the colors. But of course I had to also do it when writing the colors, which I didn't even consider. *dang*
This version will just erase the old ini and create an new one. Colors should be ok.
Use the ingame updater or this link to download.
2009-01-31 Version 1.91 released
Fixed career not being terminated after viewing replay. Thanks to Tiggan.
Changed drawing engine to the one I'm using in Red Storm Rising.
2008-12-22 Version 1.90 released
Not only did I made some typing errors I also never mentioned Hongkong2. It's the same as the original Hongkong map,
except that the Paris exit is moved south one dot and the number of local flights is limited to 1.
Also, on Vista, my mouse cursor looked really strange. Now, I'm damn sure it didn't always look like that. Anyways, I changed it, so now on Vista it looks ok. If you're on XP, let me know if it still does look ok.
2008-12-21 Version 1.89 released
Added Roanoke ! Another great map. And it'll be a challenge ;-)
Also, too many exits at a bad altitude will now get you fired.
If you start Kennedy Approach with '/Big' on the command line, the screen will be double the size.
Still no hardware screen stuff implemented. Sorry.
2008-11-18 Version 1.86 released
Added a few options to the mainmenu:
E Colored Status: as before (see P)
F Show flightplan: when ON, below each plane's ID, the route (A->B) will be shown
P Preview Route: when ON, will show a plane's route on the map
O Order On ID: when OFF, plane's will be sorted on appearance instead of on ID (default)
And these options are now saved in the ini file, so you won't have to set them each time you start the game.
Also, if a plane is selected, you can press PageDown to move the ID around the plane.
2008-11-01 Version 1.85 released
- removed debug code that saved files in C:\.
2008-10-24 Version 1.84 released
- ability to upload replays.
- ability to download replays.
- another 'easy mode' feature: if enabled, the plane's flightplan will be shown just below its ID.
- added 30% chance on bad weather on the Orlando Map.
- changed number of November flights to be equal to half the number of other flights.
Unfortunately no Big Screen yet. For this I have to get a new bad weather drawing (enlarged)...
Kennedy Approach: route info.Kennedy Approach: download replay.
2008-10-23 New features in 1.9
I expected to get all the work done today, but as always time is short when I'm having fun :-\)
Anyways, some improvements and features most of you will like:
* command line switch (/Big) to have Kennedy Approach run in a bigger window (almost twice the size).
* download replays in game
* upload your own replays.
I just finished testing all the stuff, just one more thing to do, but that will have to be done tomorrow.
Also changed in 1.9 is the Orlando map: now for each Cessna (November flight) two other flights will spawn.
Remember, uploading and downloading replays is step one in my attempt to get scenario's working. And I already know how to do it! Hell, not only scenario's but custom maps to go with that!
2008-10-21 Version 1.83 released
Originally, incoming flights will not spawn too close together, there'll be a 60 seconds gap (on lower levels) between them. However, since now with Orlando there are also incoming November flights, this caused an issue since November flights don't move very fast, resulting in conflicting spawns from the get go. I fixed this appropriately.
Also, I missed something when (in 'easy' mode) the route of an aircraft is drawn: when requesting the status of an aircraft it would be wrong and also when issueing a turn-360 degree command. Fixed this also.
Finally, I reduced the size of the executable by zipping the wave files in it.
I planned to also release now the possibility to upload and download replay files (step 1 from my masterplan to get scenario's going). I however encountered one small irritating issue which is already eating 80% of the time and I also think this spawn bug (see above) should be fixed right away, so you'll have to wait for the next version.
2008-10-18 Version 1.82 released
Added Orlando flightplans HH and AH. Also changed it so half of all planes are Cessna's.
Fixed a small bug causing replays started from the mainmenu not terminating.
2008-10-12 Version 1.81 released
Again, no major or minor changes, just additions. In the main menu you'll find an option named 'colored status'. If you set that to 'On', the status for each plane that is ON ROUTE will be colored: yellow if the plane is not at the required altitude, green if it is.
But, that's not all. On request I also added a 'route preview' (anyone know of a better name, gimme a ring!). If you select a plane, the course it will take will be highlighted. Also, if you request an aircraft's heading and altitude, its course will be highlighted.
Kennedy Approach: colored statusKennedy Approach: route preview.
2008-10-06 Version 1.8 released
No major or minor changes, just a new map: Orlando, as requested, specified and made up by Bluevoss!
2008-08-03 Version 1.7 released
I've only been able to run Kennedy Approach on Vista and Windows XP. Thus I never knew it didn't run on windows2000/win98/win95 (anyone still running that last one??)
No one told me so I guess no-one cared :-\) However, 'win2000' (the forum user) informed me. And after he ran some tests for me, we quickly found out why, we fixed that issue et voila, 1.7 is born.
Kennedy Approach now also works on Windows 2000 and Windows 98. (On Windows 95 it works, but without the sound).
As you can see, I also completely rewrote these pages (except for the forum part). The manual should now be complete.
Enjoy the game!
(I've made a small decision, I was first thinking about making KA nicer, bigger screen, nicer graphics. However, after playing around with that, I came to the conclusion that it just ruins the gameplay. It wouldn't be KA. Secondly, I'm not good in graphics. Now, the next game on my remake list will be either 'Silent Service (2)' or 'Red Storm Rising'. I will soon start working on it. So stay tuned.)
2008-07-24 Version 1.6 available
Well I just released 1.5 and straight away discovered that I left some debug code enabled that limited gameplay to 3 minutes.....
So, here is 1.6
If you got 1.4 (or 1.5), all you need to do is hit the 'c' key followed by the 'g' key (in the main menu) to get 1.6
Otherwise, download it from the download page.
Ok guys, this is it.
2008-07-24 Version 1.5 available
- New: in the overview, it will mark planes that are being delayed. So help these first to get a better evaluation. (See screenshot below)
- Fixed: replays and career files are not always saved with the default extension.
- Fixed, burned and buried: Playing last night, I discovered that there is still something wrong when issueing orders after a plane turns. Now I know why it doesnt work correctly in the original either.
- Added screenshot ability. Press PrtScn (printscreen) to make a screenshot. Shots will be in bmp and placed in the 'screenshots' subfolder.
- Fixed: no local flights appearing in Chicago map.
Kennedy Approach: Delay indicator.
2008-07-20 Version 1.4
The following things 'fixed':
- Weather moves correctly when in time acceleration mode.
- Speed is now reset to x1 when exiting playback/playing mode.
- Demo is now started after 1 minute automatically. (debug code removed)
And these things are added:
- Background map for JFK enabled.
- F8 now sets speed x8
- Integrated 'new version' check and download option. (Does not work when you're behind a proxy).
- Added menu option to show homepage in browser
Kennedy Approach: JFK background map.Kennedy Approach: Auto Updater.Kennedy Approach: Auto Updater.Kennedy Approach: mouse support.
But that's not it, did some more:
- Fixed: When calculating end round results, the number of shotdown aircrafts wasn't taken into account.
- Fixed: If you ever used the 'say heading and altitude' command, you might have noticed it wasn't replayed correctly.
- New: If demo mode is entered, a random file from the 'replays' folder will be picked and shown. (If there are no files, the built-in demo will be shown as before).
- Fixed: Highest difficulty is now gs 16.
- New: Added a very basic virus check.
- New: Mouse support
2008-07-16 Version 1.3
This is starting to look like a bad programmer's blog !
Working all day and then fixing software quickly, late in the evening, definitly is not good for the quality of the code.
The crash bug when a replay ends wasn't caused by thread (mis)management. It happens only when the round ends (or the replay ends) just as a plane is in conflict with two other planes. Freeing the plane causes the conflict to be freed, which in turn wants to free the planes. Sad thing is that I did already notice this way earlier and took care of it, but only when I free the plane, not when Delphi does it through 'destroy' called from a list. Anyways, fixed in 1.3
However, while trying to fix this non-existant thread issue, I actually made things worse in 1.1 and 1.2. You'll notice that in 1.1 and 1.2 it will eventually start to use 100% cpu...
So I reverted back to beta 10 and started over.
Good thing is that while using a stress-replay (20 planes on screen all declaring emergencies), I noticed that some sound threads weren't terminated at all. I fixed that too.
Again, sorry for the inconvenience. I promise I won't do it anymore :-\)
2008-07-13 Version 1.0 available !
- Fixed "fuel amount" for small planes (those that fly from and to airports on the map, the light planes). They had enough for one hour of fuel, now only 15 minutes.
- Changed sound mixer. It used to change the volume system wide, now, only for the program.
- Fixed airport Megs Field on the Chicago map. Only small planes will come from/go there.
- Fixed aircraft announcement time. Used to be one minute, is now 30 seconds.
- Added time acceleration. Works in demo/replay mode as well. Press F5 for normal time, F6 for double speed and F7 for quad speed.
- Fixed the problem when issuing commands where command mode was entered before a plane reached a dot and left after the plane past the dot.
2008-05-25 Version 1.0 will be here soon!
What more to say. I'll be having a holiday soon and then I will get this over with
2007-12-15
Beta 10 is available.
This is more or less the last beta, there is really only one issue I haven't solved yet. Everything else works well.
Thanks to Ernustus and Timothy for their support, I'm sure that without them, there would have been a lot more bugs/inconsistencies in Kennedy Approach. And I'm sure it would have taken far longer for me to find them. Again, thanks a lot!
After beta 10, when I've finished that one issue, version 1.0 will be made available.
Version 1.1 will also include custom map making, online scoring, replay uploads and downloads. Nothing more interesting than seeing how well you're doing :-\)
- Distance between planes to cause a conflict is now three dots. I thought I fixed this earlier but I made a mistake there, I changed it to 3 dots vector-wise, which isn't what we want. It's now 3 dots, e.g. in any 4x4 area, only 1 plane can be at a certain altitude.
- Changed speed of weather to match speed of light planes.
- Reduced "no-fly zone" area to (vector wise) 0.5 dots. So now it is possible to have planes take off from Washington, heading 315 and then right to 045 to proceed on to New York.
- Job offers menu / game settings. I forgot to allow skill-levels beyond 14 and 15.
- When viewing a replay, spawning planes will appear immediately instead of after one minute.
- When viewing a replay, weather will not show up (or at the wrong place).
- Career progress being reset.
2007-12-09
Beta 9 is available.
- Take off directions for some airports was wrong.
- Chicago map.
- Moved Hongkong and Chicago two levels up.
- Spoken command will be visible until completely spoken (unless interrupted by the next spoken command).
- Changed way alerts and conflicts are being handled.
- Changed the way airports and their lights are drawn.
- Preps for loading custom maps.
- Grid map dots sometimes visible over airports.
- Prime Time maps must now be played for 20 minutes (instead of 15).
- Reduced speed of weather.
- Change sound system to use DirectX.
2007-12-04
Beta 8 is available.
The screwup fairy visited me again. I noticed that replaying right after a game caused a crash. On closer inspection, I noticed that one line (which was very needed) was deleted. It's probably a developer thing. Selecting something (either manually or by Find) and then switching screens, pressing the occasional enter and blam, a bug is born. Happens a lot to me, since I'm stupid enough to test from within the IDE.
2007-12-03
Beta 7 is available.
Added Hongkong map, now this one will drive you nuts! Stay clear of the mountains!
A big thank you to Ernestus for the idea and the map's layout!

2007-12-02
Beta 6 is available.
- Added Career save and load.
- Changed Replay save and load.
- Made backgrounds for New York and Washington. (Only for C-64 color scheme).
- Changed Rate of planes spawning behind each other.
- New Planes won't spawn close to weather.
- New Various tweaks regarding map and difficulty settings (using the manual as input). E.g. on Atlanta, there won't be any Atlanta-Atlanta flights. And so on.
- Fixed Planes crashlanding on New York map (La Guardia airport had wrong approach point...)
- Removed some flightplans (esp. on Washington map).
- Fixed Demo play causing AV.
- Planes will get shot down when flying over the Washington no-fly zone.
- Reduced size of executable significantly.
2007-11-26
Again, numerous things I changed, see the changelist. Thanks to T. for testing.
- Fixed exit names drawn too far to the left.
- Added icon.
- Fixed command string is no longer drawn after hitting 'escape'
- Fixed limit on the number of Through Flights, should've been on Local Flight.
- Increased speed of airplanes, now matches the manual.
- Increased seperation space to 3 dots (was 60 pixels, which was incorrect since dots are spaced different vertically and horizontally).
- KA can now handle missing, incomplete and corrupt ini-files.
- Weather spawn location and direction.
- Map size from 21x21 dots to 20x20 dots (as it should have been from the start.. doh).
- Changed all maps to match the original.
- Changed the way ticks, tocks and dongs are handled. KA should now be much more responsive while a voice is being played.
- Changed and added various colors.
- Reverted back to original flashes in the storm.
- Size of storm. The size should match the original, however, the storm is drawn a bit different.
- While issueing a command, the turn direction would sometimes go wrong.
- You'll receive $600 bonus for completing a Local Flight.
- Delay will be caused when: a) Rerouting Through Flights b) Postponing take-off's for more than one minute for exit flights.
- Added London map.
- Concordes will only appear for certain ROUTES, instead of for certain cities or airports.
- Promotion or being laid off after finishing a round. Salary will increase as will your rank and your score when finishing a round.
- If two (or more) planes collide, they'll all crash.
Only a few things left to implement, minor ones. The only big issue is tuning the difficulty levels. I think that some levels are simply to easy. Let me know what you think.

It's slowly time to start thinking about a multiplayer version. Ofcourse a multiplayer version would require a bigger map because I don't think there'll be much to do for two (or more) players on one (20by20) map.
So far, I've got three ideas:
- One map, where certain planes are to be directed by certain players. E.g. blue planes for player 1, yellow planes for player 2.
- For every player a seperate map where the maps are linked. So a player directing a plane off the map would cause the plane to show up on the map of an other player.
- One map for two players, where one player directs the plane and another player spawns the planes. The goal of the 'spawning' player then is of course to make it as difficult as possible for the 'directing' player.
If you've got ideas, feel free to share them with me.

Beta 4 is available. Note that replays from Beta 3 and the config.ini file will no longer work. (Just place this version in a seperate folder and it's ready to go). There are numerous things I changed, thanks to T. for pointing out some of them:
- added radardishes
- altered denver map to allow flightplans Seatle-Dallas vv
- added flightplans for Atlanta-L.A. vv in Dallas map.
- added white house and monument
- fixed a bug where it would take new planes more and more time to spawn
- added 'lights' to concorde.
- changed allocation of new planes alltogether.
- changed in game state model
- replaced 'courier new' font by 'c64 font'
- added 'big' c-64 font
- added all original menus
- added scoring results
- added time offset to maps
- extended color scheme
- fixed bug in replays folder being created over and over
- changed demo is now being played from memory
- changed difficulty based on time of map and skillevel (instead of just skillevel).
- changed some of the shortcut keys, added others
- changed screen borders
- career mode is enabled. (Save and Load does not work yet!)
No new screenshots this time, but another, short, video of gameplay here (on youtube). While you're there, leave a comment. Thanks.
2007-11-20
I also added (and changed) all the menus, see the screenshots to the right. And I changed demo play (now it plays a compiled demo instead of loading a saved replay).
Fixed one bug (bug is a big word here): planes leaving for Paris at an heading of SouthWest in the London map will now no longer be flagged as an 'invalid exit'.
I also changed all these pages to be xhtml 1.0 compliant, some browsers might display garbage as I have noticed. I've got no problems using 'the o so bad' MS IE 7.
Finally, I created a small video (teaser or trailer you decide) of Kennedy Approach:

Beta 3 is available. Didn't change too much from beta 2. Beta 3 supports custom colorising.
Once started it will make an ini file, you can change the colors in there. Two schemes are provided by default, c64 and Atari colors.
If you finish a level, a replay is automatically saved and you can replay it later.
Changed the colors to match the original games. Changed to Courier New font. Changed font positions on screen. Changed sound handler. Added correct route calculation (when you select a plane you will see its expected flightpath).
Still enough to do, but that will be for later. Cheers.

I didn't have much feedback but then again, who cares about an old C-64 game these days.
I did stumble on some old posts of people who enjoyed the game as much as I do. It was on the AtariAge forums. Some persons requested an Atari skin for the game.
I never knew this game was available on the Atari's back then. And I noticed it was available on the Amiga as well. And I had both computers.....
The amiga game I played a few minutes yesterday thanks to the Emulator. For some reason it just doesn't feel right. The Amiga voice is way off.
Anyways, back to the skin. Someone pointed me to three images of the Atari version and I haven't found any more. Too bad, since that means I will have to just random pick some colors. Then again, I'm gonna make the color settings available in an ini file. So anyone can change it as they see fit.
I finished demo mode and replay mode (still need to do some coding on it tho) but I got it working after solving two major bugs. I spent I guess 80% of the time on 20% of the code. Threads and re-entry... Third party components are a bliss, but if things don't work as advertised they better not provide them. (For some coders 'stop' doesn't mean stop)
And my fear about the Quartz font has materialised. On Windows XP it isn't available. So I could ask users to go download 56 MB (YES!!) or draw it myself. I will go for the second option. For now, I reverted to Courier New. Also, on XP, for some reason, no sound is played when in Demo mode. I've got no clue why it wouldn't work, so that's another thing to find out.
Enough to do (see below) hence Beta 3 will be available by the end of this week (that's on Sunday!).

Time for beta 2 (Let's see how my palls at Simfly like this one). I added almost everything I wanted to add, just a few small things need to be done:
- There is no rating
- Some routes are not set (as a result, you will always get a penalty for these routes).
- The Washington area still lacks its monuments and its no-fly zone.
- Still no rivers and sea drawn.
- Difficulty settings need tuning. (I just added some real nasty values in there).
- No replay / load / save / career mode stuff.
On the other hand, all else seems to work just fine. Wanna try your 15 minutes of fame as an ATC? Download beta 2. Let me know what you think or what issue you found. Mail me.
I added the manual as well. It's (almost completely) the original manual, I haven't changed it yet wrt the current controls and I haven't finished the layout yet.

The most difficult thing I had to solve was the timer issue. Using Delphi and the windows messaging system , this proved to be a real pinta. I spent about four days getting it right (well, I DO have a job =]).
I changed the font (well, not much of a font really, just some pixels..) because the one complaint I got was that "D" and "O", "W", "H" and "M" were so difficult to distinguish. I'm now using a font named "Quartz". (And looking into the future, I will probably have to draw it myself due to the fact that I don't think it is available on windows xp)
Gameplay wise, it is (and will be) exactly the same as the C-64 version. Graphics wise, I've made some changes. I'm sure that as long as the gameplay isn't affected, no-one will care. The thunderstorm has 'lightning' appearing at random places instead of the two bulky flashes appearing every half second in the original game. The clouds are also somewhat transparent. Planes have flashing lights too. Just click on the image to zoom..
Things that I did finish: added Denver, Washington, New York and Dallas maps. Added a scoring table. Fixed fuel status of planes (planes now run out of fuel!). Fixed the delay stuff (planes expect to land/pass though/takeoff in a certain amount time).
Other things that I still need to fix: LGA airport is drawn wrong. mountains (and other objects) are drawn outside of the radar screen. Grid dots appear over 'exit' names. Not all flightplans do have a correct distance set. The washington area has no 'no fly zone' nor buildings. None of the maps do have their river/land background. And of course the main menu, game levels and career mode stuff.

Back in the days, my favourite games were Red Storm Rising and Kennedy Approach. Both games just got me hooked for months, hell, years even. I still play them now and then thanks to the C64/Amiga emulators.
I always wanted to code these games myself and the sh*t finally hit the fan. I started on Kennedy Approach.
Spending one long night on coding Kennedy Approach, I had a working version. Sure gotta respect Andy Hollis, I'm amazed at what he did with only using 32K of ram (and 32K of rom)....
